Too bad it’s only useful for evil clerics and requires a terrible feat as prerequisite. Even without the shitty corrupted paladin, the book, aside from a few mechanical high points, is a melange of bland, forgettable villains in a book that purports to be about how to make villains that players will remember years later.

There are eight villains written about in the book each one getting its own chapter. I suppose the generous sacrifice is on the part of your loyal minions, because shoving your negative levels off onto them sure doesn’t seem good. If you’re a melee bard, or a paladin who values effectiveness over not being disgusting, you can gib your enemies to sicken everybody within 30′ for a round.

None of this is at all new, even to neophyte DMs, and could probably have been skipped. Basic organizational structures are covered, as well as what types of villains they’re useful for, oof is a good inclusion for DMs who aren’t very good at the organizational thing.

All you get in exchange is a once per day Disguise Self, mind, with extra uses as you give up Trap Sense increases, but if you’re not using Trapfinding, or have multiple classes that grant it, it’s a good deal. A number of the tips here are actually useful, especially for eemplars recurring villain, or better, the hidden or not so hidden villain who appears to be a good guy.

There are seven archetypes listed and while exmeplars is not a complete listing for all types of villains these do seem to be the most common kinds. Available at level 1, you get exempalrs first ceremony, granting your entire party the Message spell, at will. If you really feel like stripping PCs of the hard earned benefits of those ceremony feats, teamwork benefits, and group affiliations, you can do it temporarily with this pretty fucking terrible spell.

The other two ceremonies, available at levels 5 and 9, are just as good. Frankly, this should have been turned around, allowing a PC to soak negative levels for the rest evul the party.


The next section is the standard villainous plots, objectives, and such.
