Like all Uris books, it is exceptionally well written, the story line is engaging and the main characters are compelling not only through their work, leoh their personal lives as well. Topaz is my favorite, which was also made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock. Without some real evidence, I can’t accept this. This takes the reader into the world of post WWII espionage.

Good Read of Remembrance I lived through the angst of the Cuban missile crisis and Topaz brings that time back to me with frightening realism! Like most people, Nicole does want her spouse to conform to her vision of what she wants him to be–someone powerful, but less involved in the day to day activities of keeping the world safe for democracy. There’s certainly not enough quality to redeem it.

The events in Topaz are based to a limited degree on the Martel affairwhich involved a Soviet defector, Anatoliy Golitsynwho indicated there were deep KGB penetrations within the French establishment. It was a worldwide best-seller, translated into a dozen languages, and was made into a feature film instarring Paul Newman, directed by Otto Preminger, as well as into a short-lived Broadway musical 12 previews, 19 performances in Uris’ novel Topaz was adapted for the screen and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

It was a critical and commercial failure. It is a tactic that has become widespread, as evidenced by the Steele Dossier and the flood of fake news. It’s been years since I read a Leon Uris novel.

To believe these characters, the only greater threat to mankind than Communism is women, and how horrible they are that they dare to express their unhappiness when their men have affairs, either of the business or the romantic variety, both of which they apparently need like air and water.


What was the worst part of this book? One of the most interesting facets was the disclosure of the new at that time concept of “disinformation,” used by the Russians to sow confusion and distrust in France toward their allies. He recreates the tension and intrigue of the times very well. The book is fast paced and fairly linear with only a brief flashback to WWI to flesh out the main character and his colleagues in French intelligence.
